Why The Pursuit Of More Leaves Us Feeling Less Fulfilled

In our relentless pursuit of success, it’s easy to fall into the trap of “more is better.”

We might push ourselves to climb the career ladder, endlessly accumulate material possessions, or seek validation on social media…

…only to find we’re left feeling exhausted, disconnected, and far from what truly matters.

How many times have you found yourself stuck in this cycle, only to feel the same restlessness and emptiness?

The Taoist perspective offers a gentle reminder: excess drains us.

Whether it’s overworking, overindulging, or overthinking, striving too hard in one direction can upset our balance and lead to frustration and fatigue.

Finding Fulfillment Through Moderation

Moderation can feel challenging in a culture that celebrates excess.

However, it’s important to note that moderation isn’t about denying yourself ambition or the joys of life.

Instead, it’s about finding balance in how we approach our desires and actions.

Taoism teaches us that life works best when we stay within our natural balance.

Think of a river—when it overflows its banks, it causes destruction. That’s excess. When it dries up, it can’t sustain life. That’s deficiency

The same is true for us.

When we constantly chase after material things or push for more success, we can end up feeling drained and disconnected.

But when we embrace moderation, we can find contentment in what we have and who we are, living in a way that feels balanced, grounded, and fulfilling.

#1: Recognize Your Imbalances

Take a moment to reflect on areas where excess might be creeping into your life. Are you working too much, neglecting relationships, or overindulging in certain habits?

Start to spot the overload in your life:

  • “I’ve been working nonstop, and I feel like I’m running on empty.”
  • “I can’t remember the last time I laughed with a friend or felt truly connected.”
  • “I’ve been numbing myself with [food, social media, or distractions] instead of facing what’s really bothering me.”

Awareness is your first step toward a more grounded and intentional life.

#2: Pause & Let Go

When you feel the urge to overdo something—whether it’s staying up late, taking on more work, or having another treat—practice stopping in the moment.

Ask yourself:

  • “Is this choice serving me or holding me back?”
  • “How will I feel about this choice later?”
  • “What am I really seeking in this moment: comfort, distraction, or balance?”

Each small act of restraint strengthens your ability to feel present, in control, and connected to what matters.

#3: Make Space For What Matters

Moderation isn’t just about letting go of excess, but rather, making room for the things that bring joy and meaning to your life. Ask yourself:

  • “Who is someone I care about but haven’t spent time with lately? Can I make space to reconnect with them?”
  • “When was the last time I truly appreciated stillness? Could I take a walk or sit quietly to enjoy the moment?”
  • “What physical or mental clutter am I holding onto? How might letting go of these things create space for something better?”

By reflecting on these questions and taking small steps to act on them, you open yourself to a life that feels richer, calmer, and more aligned with what truly matters.
